My Pain Journey

In 2011, I started to experience severe pain in most of my muscles and joints. This pain became chronic and hindered my ability to live my life as I choose: active and involved. Like many others I've met on this journey, I was diagnosed and treated for many different ailments and diseases. I saw all the specialists: medical, naturopathic, osteopath, homeopathic, a physiatrist, rife therapist, infectious disease specialist. Lyme disease specialists, the list goes on. Nothing worked for me. I tried 21 different medications for pain. Nothing worked. I  was a patient at a chronic pain clinic for 10 years, first every 12-16 weeks and then every 8 weeks, for injections of cortisone and /or Botox, for temporary relief. Under the guidance of many of these therapists and doctors, I tried many different diets and infusions, salt room, float tank, bone broth treatment (with added fresh organic chicken feet!) Yes, I've tried all the things over those ten years. Are you nodding your head now? 

It's so hard to persevere when we are in such severe pain day in and day out, with no long term relief. I got to the point that I needed a handicap parking permit, had to use elevators because I couldn't climb stairs in the schools I worked in, needed wheelchair assistance at airports, had to sell my house because I couldn't look after the property, moved to an apartment, got a handicapped parking spot- planning ahead for the worst. I spent thousands of dollars of my own money on therapies not covered by insurance, hoping something would help turn the pain around. Does this sound familiar? 

Believe me, there is always hope, and I have finally found the answer to deal with my diagnosed two types of arthritis. I now live my life again, walking, driving without having to stop frequently to walk or stretch, cycling, dancing, climbing stairs, all the things I enjoy. 

Why? Because I was encouraged by a medical specialist who had a similar experience to my own, to try the whole food plant based diet and lifestyle for three months. I had a small cheering team who kept me focused, I did all the research on my own without the support or guidance of a specialist, I persevered through the tough bumps along the way, and sure enough, after three months, I started to notice a shift! Every month after that only got better. Six months in and I had 70% less pain and felt much more energetic, healthy and optimistic that my life was only going to get better. Almost three years later, I pinch myself every day as I enjoy life with a consistent 90% less pain which hindered me for so long! I enjoy a Whole Food Plant Based diet and lifestyle and have inspired others to give it a try.
